💛 HYPNOBIRTHING IS JUST FOR HOME BIRTHS:
Hypnobirthing is for hospital births and birth centres just as much as home births. There are no hard & fast rules you just need your knowledge, techniques and autonomy.
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING IS JUST FOR NATURAL BIRTHS:
Hypnobirthing is for all types of births, natural, assisted, induced, planned C-sections, unplanned C-sections and emergency C-Sections – why would you turn away the opportunity to remain calm and confident in any of these situations!?
💛 THERE'S NO POINT IN HYPNOBIRTHING F YOU'RE HIGH RISK:
If you’re high risk, Hypnobirthing is perhaps even more important as you are likely to be offered a more medicalised environment so learning how to navigate your options and convert your mental and physical birth space into one that supports physiological birth can only be a good thing, right!?
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING IS JUST FOR HIPPIES:
Think you’re ‘not the sort of person’ Hypnobirthing is aimed at – this was 100% me at my first birth – I’m no hippie and to be fair – the local offerings back then did little to dissuade my view that I’d be expected to dance naked round a stone circle. Since my chaotic and ill-informed first birth I’ve been converted – believe me – if it’s for me it’s for you as well.
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING IS JUST RELAXING AND BREATHING:
There’s a lot more to Hypnobirthing that a bit of relaxation and breathing. It’s a complete birth preparation designed to release fear and build confidence, allowing you to plan and make decisions about the right birth for you.
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING IS LOAD OF AIR-FAIRY NONSENSE:
Hypnobirthing is evidence-based and straightforward science. It’s a silly name for something which is really logical and once you understand the physiology behind it you’ll find it’s anything but ‘airy-fairy’.
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING GUARANTEES A PAIN-FREE BIRTH:
I’d love to say Hypnobirthing guarantees a pain-free birth but that would be a whole load of crap. While there are those who do in fact experience what they describe as a ‘pain-free’ birth, the point of Hypnobirthing is to reduce the discomfort we may feel and learn effective techniques to cope with the sensations of labour.
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING GUARANTEES A NATURAL BIRTH:
There are no guarantees when it comes to birth and thank goodness we have medical advances to step in and help out when special circumstances arise. What Hypnobirthing will do is increase the chance of you achieving a natural birth, if that is what you want, and should things take an unexpected turn, it’s going to help you remain calm and make positive choices ensuring you’re in the driving seat when it comes to decisions being made about your birth.
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING IS REALLY EXPENSIVE:
Whether Hypnobirthing is expensive or not is subjective. What value do you put on your birth education? How does it compare priority wise compared to a brand-new nursery, the latest travel system, photoshoot, gender reveal party, a couple of nice dinners or say, 4 months of your daily coffee shop cuppa before work (which you’re likely to be cutting down on anyway!). For those who really want to do a course but are struggling, there are often payments plans available (there are with me anyway) to make it easier on the monthly outgoings.
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING ISN'T RELEVANT TO BIRTH PARTNERS:
Hypnobirthing is incredibly valuable for birth partners. Being on the same page, learning how to support your partner and understanding the huge role you can play makes a massive difference and is often a huge part of the feedback I get from my clients ‘the midwives kept saying how amazing he was!’.
💛 HYPNOBIRTHING PUTS YOU IN A TRANCE WHERE YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL:
Hypnobirthing is not Derren Brown-style hypnosis – there’s no clicking your finger and clucking like chickens. Think of it more like sports psychology – utilising the power of the mind to help the body perform at its physical best. This does involve an element of going into oneself and really connecting with your instinctive and intuitive side of your being but nothing’s going to stop you from popping your head up and having your say.
💛 CAREGIVERS ARE NOT SUPPORTIVE OF HYPNOBIRTHING:
More & more caregivers are receiving training in Hypnobirthing and many midwives are themselves trained in Hypnobirthing and able to both recognise and support Hypnobirthing parents. If you encounter a caregiver who is dismissive of Hypnobirthing it’s likely they are uneducated in the concept and have made a number of assumptions that lead them to think they are unable to support you. If you find yourself in this situation, explain how you are planning to use your Hypnobirthing techniques, they may be surprised (in a good way!) and ask them to support you in your wishes.
